If your service group has or supports cross functional teams, chances are you have a matrix organization. Many groups have them but don’t recognize it. Others have loosely defined matrix structures with little thought for the people and operational mechanisms needed to make them work well.
As a result, the matrix organization and matrix management have been getting a bad rap for several years by companies that put relatively little effort into the design and build-out of their matrix structures. It’s easy to say that they don’t work, especially since that seems to be a popular opinion. But the truth for a vast majority of companies is that nothing will work better than a well-designed matrix with the appropriate operational mechanisms and people armed with collaborative skillsets.
