Leading in the New Year

As a leader or manager, the start of the new year is an excellent time to gather with your work group or team to set joint New Year’s resolutions and goals.  As a starting point, we suggest you have an open and honest dialogue where you reflect on the past year’s accomplishments and challenges.  Some questions to ask your team to get the conversation started include:
  • What are you most proud of from 2004?
  • If you could do one thing over, what would it be?
  • How well did we work together as a team?
  • Were issues resolved to your satisfaction? If not, where should we improve?
  • Was there balance between family and work?
  • How did our values come to life this past year and help to guide us in our decision making?
  • How was your expertise leveraged and utilized and where do you want to add value this year?

Most likely, the answers to these questions will lead you to forming resolutions that are more meaningful and more significant.  By setting resolutions together you will also gain a deeper sense of commitment and you will strengthen the partnership between your workgroup members.

To make even more impact this year, consider including a small version of this exercise in your weekly meetings. For example, on a weekly basis discuss the following:

  • What were you most proud of last week and how did it contribute to the business?
  • What are you going to do next week and how will it contribute to the business?
  • What help do you need?

By discussing these questions, you will guide your team in focusing on what is most impactful and how they are contributing to the business.  In addition, you can get the team involved to coach and provide immediate assistance as needed.

May it be a wonderful year for you, your team and your organization!
