We work in a fast-paced world.  Expectations and demands are at an all time high and we are faced with the challenge of doing more with less.  Sometimes our To-Do lists can feel overwhelming because it seems that there are just not enough hours in the day to get it all done.  Instead of feeling anxiety or stress, we suggest you take 5 minutes each morning to reflect on your day and get yourself in a Consultative Mindset.  Similar to your physical exercise workout that builds your body, the 5 Minute Consultative Mindset workout will help you start your day with the positive intentions of building great relationships and partnerships and develop your consultative muscles!

This is a quick workout but with great results.  Start by taking 30 seconds for each item to think about the concepts listed below and another 30 seconds to decide what actions you will take to achieve results:

  1. Check-in with yourself mentally and physically.  Take a few moments to think about how you are feeling.  Are you overwhelmed?  Are you feeling anxious?  Are you feeling passionate and excited? Or perhaps, do you feel a cold coming on?  Recognize these feelings consciously and take action.  Think through what you could do to increase your physical energy and how to be mentally alert.  Eat a good healthy breakfast, go to the gym, meditate or just take time to breathe throughout the day.

  2. Appreciate the relationships you have with clients and colleagues.  Think of someone you work with and let them know how much you value and appreciate the work they do.  Show your appreciation by simply telling the person directly or by taking them out for lunch or for a cup of coffee.  Recognizing the valuable relationships is key to your consulting practice.

  3. Recognize your strengths and what is unique about you.  We often get caught up in the day-to-day tasks of what we do.  It is rare that we sit back and reflect on our own strengths and uniqueness.  Think about how your individuality can add something of value to your work team or client.  What new idea have you been wanting to discuss with your clients or peers?  What value can you add in a meeting or discussion?  How can you use your strengths to help someone else today?  What unique value do you bring to your relationships and consulting engagements?

  4. Think about what you’d like to accomplish, what are your goals?  This can be for both the long-term and short-term.  For the short-term, decide what it is you want to accomplish for the day or for the week.  Think through how your goal for today will help you to accomplish a long-term goal.  Have you been wanting to learn something new?  Have you been wishing to build a relationship with someone?  Decide one thing you will do today that will help you achieve your longer term goals.

  5. Establish a personal -intention for today.  Think about what you need most.  Do you need more patience working in your team?  Do you want more courage for a presentation with a client?  Do you just want an overall great day in which everything flows?  Do you want to achieve success with a particular consulting intervention?  Use your consulting skills to help you be the best that you can be and keep in mind your overall desire and intention for the day.

Taking time out for ourselves is something we often neglect to do as consultants.  It is too easy to put our clients first and ourselves last.  As you think about your goals for the coming New Year, remember to include “I will take 5 minutes to create the Consultative Mindset each day.”  Try dedicating five minutes to yourself every day for a month and see what a difference it can make in your consulting success.
