Creating Strong Partnerships in order to Lead Teams

An effective leader, at any level, knows that they cannot achieve results alone.  Achieving results requires the knowledge and talent from everyone on your team.  In order to utilize the talent among team members, it is essential that, you as a leader, create strong partnerships with your colleagues and team.

Developing strong partnerships within your team, requires you, as a leader to:

  • Actively involve others in planning: when setting goals solicit ideas from everyone in your group and discuss how you will work together.
  • Keep the team focused on the higher level goal when resolving conflicts and disagreements.
  • Promote collaboration:encourage the exchange of ideas and resources among team members and let them know the value they bring to the situation.
  • Build trusting relationships: trust is earned over time, however you can build the foundation by demonstrating integrity and honoring commitments.

By creating a work culture that is based on sound partnerships, you will find that not only will you gain support from your team, but you will also achieve tremendous results.

Ask Suzanne

Dear Suzanne:

I've am working on a project and have been appointed the Team Leader.  I'm finding my new found responsibility to be overwhelming and I'm not sure where to begin.  Do you have any suggestions on how I can get started?

Thanks,

Ann
Healthcare Project Leader

Dear Ann:

Congratulations on your new role. It may seem daunting, but remember you were designated this role for a reason. Getting a project going with a new team can be a challenge. Creating a work agreement is a great way to launch a team. You, along with your team, should set clear goals, processes and measures. In addition, talk about how you are going to work together and communicate with each other throughout the project.  By doing this, you and your team will have an opportunity to share the value each one of you brings to the project, raise any concerns, and clarify goals and expectations.    Creating the work agreement upfront will set you on the right track to achieving the desired results and enjoying the ride as well!

Best of luck,
Suzanne
